One day, the dryer broke down. We inherited these laundry machines from the previous owners, and we weren’t in love with them for obvious reasons. I thought – this is not a problem, because I fix stuff. It’s what I do. However, some stuff isn’t worth fixing, and I may have offered only a halfhearted attempt on this fix. I did some research, found a part at a local appliance warehouse, and fixed the dryer. And then it broke again a day later.

As it was nearing my birthday, we thought it a good excuse to purchase new machines for our laundry room. So… we did some research, went to the local electronics store, and bought new laundry machines to be delivered the following week.

And then it hit me. There was NO WAY I was placing brand new, shiny, high tech laundry machines in our old, nasty, 70’s style laundry room. And I had one week to ensure that wouldn’t happen. I knew if I could get the ceiling stripped, re-textured and painted, and the tile on the floor with a bit of trim and wall paint, I could finish the rest of the room after the delivery of the new machines. I almost succeeded… I did have to push delivery back by a few days (even after working on the flooring several nights in a row until 2 AM), but it was worth it.

I can’t give enough credit to my wife for coming up with the vision for this room, as I simply executed what she dreamed up. As you’ll see in the photos, this is the first of several areas in the downstairs in which we employed a shiplap/lapboard trim on the walls (you’ll see more shiplap in future posts). I’d never heard of such a thing, but my wife is a lover of Joanna Gaines. Here we are three years later and I’ve yet to watch a full episode of Fixer Upper. Oh well.
